Hi Jim, Great website indeed! I am Filipino and I work with Bank of Commerce at the Fuente Circle, Cebu City.

I just wish to add information on the Special Resident Visa offered by the Philippine Gov't. This is residing in the PI for good without marrying a Filipina. Its got lot of benefits!

For information kindly visit www.bankcom.com.ph and click on PRA (stands for Philippine Retirement Authority)

I wish to be of service for those who wants the program. Thank you.

Hi Jim, what an informative site you have put together, I found it fascinating. Am a frequent visitor to PHPS, have a lovely lady and a beautiful daughter in Southern Leyte and plan on retirement in Maasin around 2011, would appreciate your views on living in this region. Does being the father of a child make it easier to obtain residency in PHPS? If you can advice me of loopholes or other relevant information I would be most appreciative. All the best for the future and thanks for putting together your wonderful site.

Comment:
Thankyou.

Having a child will not help with your permanent residency.

The easiest way for you to get permanent residency is to be married to a Filipina. If you are married to a Filipina, you will qualify for a 13a visa. A 13a visa will allow you to live in the Philippines permanently and own a business..

If you are not married and don't want to get married, you can stay in the Philippines as a tourist for 16 months, then leave the Philippines for a short trip to any nearby country then come back and start your 16 months all over again.

I have only visited Maasin City but it seemed to me to be a pleasant place. My opinion is that it is a safe place to live and that living will be quiet but cheap.

Let me know what other questions you have by clicking on any email button on the website and sending me an email.

Regards: Jim

I am disabled with a progressive illness that has me confined to a wheelchair. I have had a filipina sweetheart, whom I met online, for about 18 months.I am desperate to visit her and she
lives on the outskirts of Cebu City. How whellchair accessible is the city,in general, and the airport?

Comment:
The Philippines in general is not disability friendly but there are plenty of disabled people who learn to cope. It is also my experience that whenever a foreigner in a wheel chair seems as if they need help, there are Filipinos willing to provide assistance. And, with no expectation of special payment.

The Mactan airport definitely is not disabled friendly. Your choice of access to the arrivals hall is stairs or escalator. However, i have seen people in wheelchairs in the arrivals hall so the airport staff must help you down some how.

Tyhe best people to speak to about wheelchairs in Cebu is Mike and Lorena at Cebu On Wheels

Dear Big Jim:
Your web page is great and full of useful info. I am getting ready to marry a young lady from the Philippines and retire there in Davao with her.I have been there twrice now and love it there and the wrether and the people and the culture.
My question is if i am married to her can i buy a house as i will have close to p80,000.00 per month to live on and i believe that is more then enough to get by on.I am looking forward to being wiht her and she is a very trusting young lady as i do trust her a lot and i know the pit falls in the Philippines.
What do you know about Davao as all i know is what she has told me but she is from General Santos but from what i have read Davao is a very nice city to live with plenty of houses to buy.
Regards
Paul

Thanks for the quick reponse on my last question. Jim i know that you have been asked this a hundred times, but I am wondering how much does it take to live a nice life style in the PI. When I move their I should have about 1700-1800 USD a month. Thanks again Jim

Comment:
You're welcome!

Outside the city, I can get by on about usd$600 per month and in a big city like Cebu City, I can get by on about usd $1,000 per month. However, the more money I have the more money I will spend. If I had usd $3000 per month, I would find ways to spend it.

So, it is very much up to you if the amount will be enough. I know for me, I can live happy and comfortably on usd $1700 per month.

whats up man, thanks for the great web site. I wil be moving their in about 2 years. my question is should I try to ship my belongings their or just sell off and show up with a back pack. also I have a harley davidson motorcycle that I would love to ship, but not sure. again thanks jason

Comment:
Not sure about motor bikes but I can tell you that the import duty for a car is 100%. 100% of their valuation which may be more than the original purchase price. So, worth checking out first.

In regard to furniture, it is so cheap to set up a house with furniture in the Philippines that you may find the cost of setting up is less than the cost of shipping and customs duty.

So, my suggestion would be to sell, give away or store your furniture, then buy again in the Philippines.

Anything you feel you can't do without, send by balikbayan box.

However, the main thing for you to consider, do not commit to any move until you have experienced a lot of the Philippines.

I hope this helps!

Regards; Jim
